Luke Williams, a thirteen-year-old loner whose mother has died, spends too much time on his computer as a way of avoiding others. Living in Meadow Junction, California in 2011, Luke discovers an unbelievable truth when chatting on his computer with a girl who apparently resides down the street from him in an abandoned house: she is typing to him from the year, 1981. Misha Austen, also thirteen, is the daughter of a military computer scientist who is working on developing the new internet. Upon exchanging information with one another, they quickly learn some startling facts: Misha is no longer alive in the year 2011, and Luke must break into her house to find clues about how to save her. In the meantime, Luke realizes the internet time window could help bring his mother back to life by warning her of an impending illness in the past. Though leery about possible consequences of changing the past, they flirt with the possibilities. Both their fathers cannot know about the time connection, and each of their best friends are confused by their recent strange behaviour. As they attempt to secretly help one another by exchanging valuable information from their own times, they learn that Misha’s father’s former partner, Kelman Kruger, is disquised as Misha’s computer teacher and will stop at nothing, on both ends of their time connection, to obtain the sole power of the time window. Both time periods conjoin in a dramatic unforeseeable conclusion.
